Biogas: win-win PDF Print E-mail

biogaz.jpgIf you raise pigs there are good chances you will have unhappy neighbors, not counting your family itself! Bad smells, flies and mosquitoes who spread dengue fever and malaria... Biogas is a solution: the pig dung is mixed with water and directed into a long plastic tube (1 m diameter, 7-10 meters long).

A slight slope makes the mixture move slowly downwards the end of the tube, the overspills is an excellent fertilizer, odorless. The system produces enough gas for 1-2 households (with 2 pigs of 40 kilos there is just enough for one household).

The women do not need to go far to collect firewood any more, they have now a clean kitchen. A typical household consumes the equivalent of a small tree every month!  Biogas saves many trees. Every year the programs help 100-200 households to install a new system, which costs about 40 euros (depending on the design, whether the farmer wants a pit in concrete etc.). The return on this investment is done in less than 8 months.

But only farms who raise pigs on a conitnuous basis can run a biogas, as it must be filled all the time with manure. Poor farmers are sometimes without the necessary capital. See how it is installed and the photo gallery. Read the report by the expert from myclimate.
